Sam Austins is an anxious fuck. His dad is in the Four Tops, taught him to play an MPC at age three, and kicked him out of the house by 18. His uncle wrote Motown's first "Money", Motown's first gold record. He is a 22 year-old artist from Detroit, Michigan whose 2015 Project GOAT propelled him to the center of Detroit’s underground rap world, and put him on bills with the likes of Playboi Carti, Vince Staples, and Juicy J. He didn’t release solo work again until he dropped “Fiji” (Take A Daytrip) and “Right Here 4 U” (Gosh Pith), which have been streamed over a million times and pushed him onto the national radar. Austins has been featured on Spotify’s Most Necessary, Alternative R&B, and Chill Vibes playlists, has trended with almost every release on Audiomack, and has been covered by the likes of Billboard, Pigeons & Planes, Fake Shore Drive, Lyrical Lemonade, Elevator Magazine, Earmilk, Rookie Mag, Respect Mag, No Jumper’s Adam22, and Boi-1da, and more. Austins was recently styled by designer Phillip Lim by personal request for his 2017 New York Fashion Week show after Lim heard his work and said it "embodied the presence of genius." The two have collaborated multiple times since then.
On Nov 9 2017, Sam released his official debut entitled ANGST, executive produced by Detroit’s SYBLYNG (Flint Eastwood, Tunde Olaniran). If Austins’ 2015 soundcloud project GOAT embodied the unbound energy of youthful rebellion, his first broadly-released project ANGST is a deep dive into the underbelly of that energy. It’s a cerebral project about paralyzing anxiety and inhibited potential, coping mechanisms and escapism. It’s Austins discarding his traditional “rap” delivery and instead using the versatility of his voice and carefully crafted soundscapes to pull us into the real angst that exists when we oscillate between ego and insecurity, victory and victimhood, stagnation and evolution. While adding to his growing portfolio of work, this project is a piece that stands alone-- A needed act of catharsis; a release in the most literal and visceral sense for an artist who is moving forward quickly.
Sam’s 2018 has included follow-up releases that blend his new found melodic voice and the rapping of his younger years. He sold out his headlining debut in Detroit, with 650+ in attendance, and has played support shows in NYC, Chicago, and LA.
